Soda Jerk

I was just 14 when Doc Block hired me.
Wow, was I as proud as a sailor out on the sea.
Hired to make shakes, sundaes and phosphate sodas
Working in Block's Drug Store.

I was liked by the girls that came in the store
Cause the ice cream scoop for them held more.
But wise Doc Block he knew it too.
'Cause he yelled out to me from the rear of the store
"Jenks, just give those girls one scoop not four"
When working in Block's Drug Store.

Doc Block had no childen like I did,
And so, I became Doc Block's adoptive kid.
And years later when we met with children of my own,
A tear filled his eyes - this I could tell,
By working in Block's Drug Store.

Doc Block is gone now and closed is the store.
With boards on the windows and on the front door.
It hurts to see it now, but we remember all the more,
'Cause we worked in Block's Drug Store.

A Bunco Lament

At Bunco one night the game did excite a lady;
For at last, she thought, she would nab the first prize-well, maybe.
Thus, she cheerfully insisted, over the din at her table, that she had rolled three 3's.
But, the girls at her table said she was not able,
For the 4's succeeded the 3 while she had left to wee, wee.
"Oh, I hate this damn game", the lady exclaimed,
"to win I'm just not able."
"But my dear", the girls did explain, "It's not the damn game -
it could be Bingo, Pinochle, or Gin.
Since the true reason we're here is to talk, not to win"

Guest Blogger Tom Jenkins
Who knew there are two poets in the family? Perhaps inspired by his recent induction into grandfatherhood, here are just some of the 6 word memoirs thoughtfully written by Tom. More to come...

Life With Annette
Found my soul mate; life continues.
Dreamed of Love, Dream came True.
Fell in love; have a family.

On Family
Married young, had children, simply lovely.
Two sons and one daughter, blessed.
Time with family, time never wasted.
Held my Grandson, All is good.

In Gratitude
Mom and Dad, thanks for life.

Six Word Memoirs

Not Quite What I Was Planning

Poetry Challenge
"When Hemingway famously once wrote, For Sale: baby shoes, never worn, he proved that an entire story can be told using a half dozen words. When the online storytelling magazine SMITH asked readers to submit six-word memoirs, they proved a whole, real life can be told this way too." Not Quite What I Was Planning offers a curious collection of famous and not so famous writers with their pint-size literary gems. What's Your Story? Source:

Bittersweet romance
Found true love, married someone else

Achievements and stinging regrets
After Harvard, had baby with crackhead

Some other mini masterpieces
Cursed with cancer. Blessed by friends
I still make coffee for two
No wife. No kids. No problems
